Highland Park Residence
Highland Park, IL USA

After raising their family in this house, the baby-boomer clients opted to expand and renovate instead of move. They loved the home’s open, informal architecture; the surrounding property; and its place as the heart of their family. The goal was to create a sophisticated space reflective of their “adult” personalities and interests, yet offer more entertaining space for kids and grandkids.

Demonstrated as soon as you enter the space, the neutral palette and new wood flooring accentuate the open, fluid character of the architecture. The furniture arrangements allow ample, uncluttered seating for formal entertaining, yet remain accessible and inviting.

Walls were relocated windows added and enlarged, such as the floor-to-ceiling windows replacing an old wall in the study, opening up the views.

The 1st floor base building was expanded to accommodate a new family gathering space in the kitchen area, to spend quality-time together cooking, eating, tv-watching, and game-playing, and more space in the Master Suite, which provides more seating, windows, closets, and a larger bathroom.

The result is an informal elegance and functionality that reflects the owners’ love of family, art, and nature.
