Washington Square Park Historic Mansion
Chicago, IL USA
Located across the street from Washington Square Park in Chicago, this historic mansion underwent a dramatic transformation that involved preserving the building façade while rebuilding the underlying structure. Gary Lee Partners collaborated with architecture firm Booth Hansen for the project. As a landmarked property, the façade of this 1890s mansion was preserved and restored to its original grandeur. Hidden behind the façade, the dilapidated structure was replaced with a new modernist structure, whose cool, minimalist palette created a quite sanctuary in downtown Chicago. Built for entertaining, the home’s amenities include a wine cellar, screening room, multiple lounge areas with bar service, multi-story outdoor living, outdoor lap pool. These spaces were connected to the Master Suite and various guest suites by a sleek, sculptural staircase clad in dark millwork and bright white lacquer.
