IEC Chicago—the Chicago Section of the Illuminating Engineering Society—bestowed Illumination Awards for two projects designed by Gary Lee Partners. The American Airlines Admirals Club at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport was transformed from a dark and dated space to one that embraces modern passenger lifestyles and strengthens brand recognition. GLP collaborated with lighting designer Ghafari Associates to architecturally integrate wall grazers and uplight covers that bring emphasis, contrast, and dimension to the space. As most of the lounge is exposed to daylight, a centralized control system is programmed to adjust lighting, shades, TVs, flight screens, microphones, and music. For the Cloud Level at AON Center project, GLP worked with Schuler Shook to transform the 70th Floor of the AON Center into the highest amenity space in Chicago. The Cloud Level design evokes elements from the dune landscapes of Lake Michigan. The style is simple, light, and utilizes natural materials. Lighting is integrated within walls, ceilings, and shelves to create visual interest and depth. Decorative lighting elements incorporate wicker and woven fabrics which add warmth and create interesting light patterns.
